Translations
The Moravians were originally German speakers. Most of the early records are written in German. However, this should not discourage you from coming to the Archives.
Some of the early records are translated into English. From ca. 1850, the Moravians kept most of their records in English. In church periodicals you will find translations of important texts. The various missionary periodicals printed translations of the reports missionaries sent to the Mission Board in Germany. And even in the 18th century some Moravian publications were made available to an English speaking audience. For example, many of Zinzendorf's works were translated into English.
Please contact us if you have questions on the availability of texts in English. We can also help you with the names of translators who are experienced with 18th century German and with Moravian terminology.
