Lecture: Poetry, Companionship, and the Divine: The Life Journey of Bishop Georg Heinrich Loskiel (1740–1815)

Georg Heinrich Loskiel (1740-1814), a Baltic German, is known for his history of the Moravian missions among the Native American. He served as pastor of the Bethlehem Moravian congregation from 1801 until 1811. During this time the large church building, now called Central Moravian Church, was built. During her presentation, Māra Grudule will clarify who the Baltic Germans were and what role the Moravians played in the Baltics. She will discuss Loskiel’s contribution to Latvian cultural history and his service as a bishop in Bethlehem (PA), as well as his poetry and friendship with David Zeisberger (1721-1808).

Dr. Māra Grudule is a professor at the Institute of Literature, Folklore and Arts at the University of Latvia.
