His on-stage antics\, colloquial speech\, and fiery sermons drew both praise and scorn across the nation. In 1915\, Sunday held a major campaign in Philadelphia and ten years later\, in 1925\, he brought his campaign machine to Winston-Salem. As Billy Sunday came to town\, Moravians in both the northern and southern provinces had opportunity to weigh in on his controversial methods. He served as pastor of the Bethlehem Moravian congregation from 1801 until 1811. During this time the large church building\, now called Central Moravian Church\, was built. During her presentation\, Māra Grudule will clarify who the Baltic Germans were and what role the Moravians played in the Baltics. Malone\, Curator at Historic Trappe\nOur lecture series is sponsored by Campbell\, Rappold & Yurasits LLP \nThe Moravian town of Bethlehem went through a series of developmental changes that saw the community go from a closed-form of church-controlled communalism to an entirely open society. This change was precipitated by the outside world’s direct influence on the Moravian’s mission efforts towards the Native Americans. Bethlehem went from an economy based on supporting their missionary goals to one that focused on pleasing outsiders through the goods and services they provided to visitors. Outsiders flocked to Bethlehem for their health\, to be entertained\, and for the church’s international trade connections. Their new economy of goods introduced the Moravians to new textiles\, books\, and other objects\, but most importantly\, to endless cycles of the wider world’s changing tastes. Outsider visitation resulted in architectural\, spatial\, and social changes within the town and the wider Moravian community that slowly dissolved Bethlehem’s communal boundaries until the town was finally open to all. \n  \nChristopher Malone is a curator and scholar who focuses on the history and material culture of the Pennsylvania Germans with a special emphasis on the Moravians and other intentional communities. Christopher completed a Masters in Architecture at Syracuse University and a Masters in American Material Culture from the Winterthur Program. His thesis centered on the ways that outsider visitation changed Moravian material culture in the community’s first one hundred years in Pennsylvania. He won the program’s E. McClung Fleming Thesis prize for the most distinguished thesis. Christopher has worked for the Moravian Historical Society and was the curator at the American Swedish Historical Museum. He is currently the Curator at Historic Trappe\, Digital Marketing Manager at the Lutheran Archives Center at Philadelphia\, and the Content Curator for the publication Americana Insights. This 1824-25 tour was an event unlike any other in American history. Fifty years after the American Revolution\, America welcomed back her youngest major-general with an outpouring of national affection on an unprecedented scale. Everywhere Lafayette went during this thirteen-month odyssey\, and he visited each of the 24 states then in the Union\, he was greeted by adoring throngs of citizens\, who organized elaborate welcome parades\, receptions\, dinners\, and balls in his honor. Lafayette truly deserved his sobriquet “The Nation’s Guest\,” as he insisted on spending time not just with the country’s elite\, but also with ordinary citizens\, as well as African Americans and Indigenous Americans. After meeting Zinzendorf in Copenhagen in 1731\, Anton traveled to Herrnhut and gave the members of the community a first-hand account of the situation of the enslaved in St. Thomas. As a result\, two men\, Leonhard Dober and David Nitschmann\, traveled to St. Thomas the next year. Their missionary efforts stand at the beginning of Moravian mission work. But as well-known as Anton Ulrich’s name may be\, very little is known about him. After giving a moving account of life on St. Thomas\, Anton quickly disappears from the stage. This presentation attempts to uncover details about his life\, based on archival records in Denmark\, Germany\, and the United States\, many of which were previously unknown.
