SUMMARY:Lecture: "On Tour with the 'Nation's Guest': Lafayette in America\, 1824–25"
DESCRIPTION:Lecture at the Moravian Archives\, with reception to follow\, and via Zoom\nDiane Windham Shaw\, Director of Special Collections\, Emerita\, Lafayette College \nAugust 2024 marks the 200th anniversary of the beginning of the Marquis de Lafayette’s “Farewell Tour” of America. This 1824-25 tour was an event unlike any other in American history. Fifty years after the American Revolution\, America welcomed back her youngest major-general with an outpouring of national affection on an unprecedented scale. Everywhere Lafayette went during this thirteen-month odyssey\, and he visited each of the 24 states then in the Union\, he was greeted by adoring throngs of citizens\, who organized elaborate welcome parades\, receptions\, dinners\, and balls in his honor. Lafayette truly deserved his sobriquet “The Nation’s Guest\,” as he insisted on spending time not just with the country’s elite\, but also with ordinary citizens\, as well as African Americans and Indigenous Americans. Although he did not visit Bethlehem during the tour\, the time he spent among the Moravians in October 1777 as he recovered from a wound sustained at the Battle of Brandywine was an important part of his American story. \n

SUMMARY:Lecture: "Who Was Anton Ulrich? The Life of an Enslaved Man from St. Thomas"
DESCRIPTION:Lecture at the Moravian Archives\, with reception to follow; and via Zoom\nby Dr. Christina Petterson and Dr. Paul Peucker \nAnton Ulrich\, an African man from St. Thomas\, is usually remembered as the instigator of Moravian mission work. After meeting Zinzendorf in Copenhagen in 1731\, Anton traveled to Herrnhut and gave the members of the community a first-hand account of the situation of the enslaved in St. Thomas. As a result\, two men\, Leonhard Dober and David Nitschmann\, traveled to St. Thomas the next year. Their missionary efforts stand at the beginning of Moravian mission work. But as well-known as Anton Ulrich’s name may be\, very little is known about him. After giving a moving account of life on St. Thomas\, Anton quickly disappears from the stage. This presentation attempts to uncover details about his life\, based on archival records in Denmark\, Germany\, and the United States\, many of which were previously unknown.

SUMMARY:Presentation: "Discovering the Nativity"
DESCRIPTION:Presentation at the Moravian Archives\, with reception to follow; and via Zoom (please register below)\nby Steven Erisoty\, Heather Reinert\, and Paul Peucker \nIn 2020 an oil painting was discovered in Germany that soon proved to be a painting by Moravian artist John Valentine Haidt. The Moravian Archives was able to purchase it and during the midst of COVID restrictions it was transported from Southern Germany to Bethlehem\, Pennsylvania. In 2022-2023 the painting was carefully conserved and it has now been returned to the Moravian Archives. \nOn November 29\, 2023\, Haidt’s newly conserved Nativity will be presented to the public. \nConservator Steven Erisoty will speak about the conservation treatment\, its challenges and the discoveries he made. \nGraphic designer and artist Heather Reinert will look at the artistic elements of the painting and uncover parallels with other early-modern artists and their work. \nMoravian archivist Paul Peucker will speak about the discovery of the painting and explain how it was determined that this is in fact a Moravian painting.

SUMMARY:Webinar series: The 1757 Moravian Book of Ceremonies
DESCRIPTION:three-part webinar series via Zoom (see the registration form below)\nby Paul Peucker\, Moravian Archives\n12:00 pm – 1:00 pm (EST)\non October 31\, November 7\, and November 14\,  2023 \nregistration fee: $49.50 for the three-part series (incl. reading materials)\nreading materials will be mailed to you after registration (we cannot guarantee registrations after October 22\, 2023 will receive physical reading materials by the first session) \nShare this event by clicking the share buttons at the bottom of this page \n \nThe Moravian Book of Ceremonies was published in 1757 and contains an overview of the history\, organization\, and liturgy of the Moravian Church. The book was published in German and French and included a series of sixteen magnificent engravings.\nIn this three-week webinar Moravian archivist Paul Peucker will discuss the history and content of the Book of Ceremonies: who was the author of the book? how did Moravians present their history? what do we learn about Moravian organization and worship\, and most importantly\, what do we learn from the sixteen engravings. \n  \n  \n  \nAfter registration you will receive a printed copy of the Book of Ceremonies (also known as Kurze\, zuverlässige Nachricht in the German language). \nDr. Paul Peucker is archivist of the Moravian Church in America\, Northern Province\, and author of Herrnhut: The Formation of a Moravian Community\, 1722-1732 (University Park: Pennsylvania State University Press\, 2022). \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nOctober 31\, 2023\, Part I: The Book and Its Content\nIn the first session\, we will look at David Cranz\, the author of the text. In addition to the Book of Ceremonies\, Cranz wrote several other books on the Moravians. Who was David Cranz and why did Zinzendorf choose him to write this official history of the Moravian Church? \n\nNovember 7\, Part II: The Author\nIn the second session\, we will talk about the content of the book. The Book of Ceremonies is the first official self-representation of the Moravian Church. What kind of image did Moravians present of themselves in 1757? What was the intention of the book? And how does the Book of Ceremonies fit in within Moravian history of the 1700s? \n\nNovember 14\, Part III: The Engravings\nThe final session will focus on the sixteen engravings that are included in the Book of Ceremonies. We will analyze the images and look at the details. We will also look at recently uncovered drawings that were intended for the Book of Ceremonies but were never included. \nRegistration Form \n\n\n \n \n Webinar series: Moravian Settlements\n Please use this form to register for our three-part webinar on Moravian Settlements on Oct. 22\, Oct. 29\, and Nov. 5\, 2024. \nRegistration Form \n\n \n \n Webinar series: Moravian Settlements\n Please use this form to register for our three-part webinar on Moravian Settlements on Oct. 22\, Oct. 29\, and Nov. 5\, 2024.
