DESCRIPTION:workshop series via Zoom (please register by filling out the form below)\nby Thomas McCullough\, Moravian Archives\nMay 11\, May 18\, and May 25\, 2021 \nCost: $65 for the three-part series\nmax. participants: 15\nparticipants are expected to participate in all three parts | course materials will be mailed to those who sign up before May 4 \nJoin assistant archivist Thomas McCullough for a three-part workshop series designed for beginner genealogists interested in using the collections of the Moravian Archives\, Bethlehem. \nMay 11\, Part I: Introducing Different Records Genres\nIn this introductory workshop\, participants will gain a cursory overview of different types of records preserved at the Moravian Archives\, Bethlehem. \nMay 18\, Part II: Diving into the Records\nIn this second workshop\, participants will learn about how to get the process started and thereafter how to access and use various types of records preserved at the Moravian Archives\, Bethlehem. \nMay 25\, Part III: Documentation and Overcoming Challenges\nIn this final workshop\, participants will tie together four critical elements of genealogy: discovery\, documentation\, organization\, and sharing. Thomas will also introduce public records and discuss how such records can be used in conjunction with church records preserved at the Moravian Archives\, Bethlehem. \nAfter completing the workshop\, you can schedule an individual two-hour session with Thomas McCullough to discuss your own genealogy and get additional help. The session can be scheduled according to your preference and costs $95.00.

SUMMARY:Presentation: Unveiling Haidt: The Discovery of an Unknown Moravian Painting
DESCRIPTION:Online presentation via Zoom (please register by filling out the form below)\nby Dr. Paul Peucker\, Moravian Archives \nIn the fall of 2020 the Moravian Archives was able to acquire a painting by Moravian artist John Valentine Haidt. The painting shows the Nativity and it is a rare example of a Biblical painting by Haidt from before he came to America. Most of his surviving European work are portraits. During this presentation we will tell you how we found out about this hitherto unknown painting and how we were able to attribute it to Haidt.

DESCRIPTION:Online lecture via Zoom (please register by filling out the form below)\nby Dr. Richard Pointer\, Westmont College \nDisplaced refugees amid Pontiac’s War (1763-64)\, Native Moravians in Britain’s northeastern colonies spent the next decade struggling to secure a peaceful homeland where they could live\, work\, and worship as they wished. Widespread violence\, settler expansion\, racial hatred\, internal tensions\, and political turmoil posed constant threats. Nevertheless\, they achieved a measure of success\, thanks largely to the leadership of Papunhank\, a Munsee prophet and Moravian convert\, whose radical pacifism and skillful diplomacy kept them alive and reasonably well. \nRichard Pointer is the author of Pacifist Prophet: Papunhank and the Quest for Peace in Early America (University of Nebraska Press\, 2020).
