DESCRIPTION:Talk by Dr. David Hewitt\nat the Gemeinhaus Saal\, Moravian Museum\, Bethlehem\, PA (Reception to follow in Central Moravian Church) \nPlease register through Historic Bethlehem Museums and Sites. \nEarly 19th-century administrator of the Moravian Church Lewis David von Schweinitz was an integral part of the scientific communities of Europe and the U.S. Schweinitz also produced numerous exquisite illustrations of plants and fungi. This illustrated talk will discuss highlights of Schweinitz’s scientific career\, his fundamental contributions to botany and mycology (the study of fungi)\, and a selection of the botanical and mycological illustrations that he produced. \nAbout the speaker: Over the past few decades\, David Hewitt has worked as a biologist in a number of different disciplines\, including botany and mycology\, and his first research publication was about Lewis David von Schweinitz.  David is affiliated with the Philadelphia Botanical Club and the Department of Botany at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia.  His work has included a variety of peer-reviewed and popular publications\, and courses\, lectures\, public presentations\, and workshops on botany\, mycology\, the history of science\, and other topics.  David’s PhD is from Harvard University\, in Organismic and Evolutionary Biology. \nCo-sponsored by Central Moravian Church’s Care for Creation and History Committees\, Historic Bethlehem Museum and Sites\, and the Moravian Archives

SUMMARY:Lecture: After the Sifting: Zinzendorf's London Sermons
DESCRIPTION:Online lecture via Zoom (please register by filling out the form below)\nby Rev. Dr. Craig Atwood\, Moravian Theological Seminary \nIn 1749 the British Parliament passed the “Moravian Act\,” which affirmed the legitimacy of the Moravian Church as “an antient [sic] and episcopal church”. This act granted the Moravians unusual privileges to operate schools\, churches\, and missions in the British Empire\, and Count Zinzendorf planned to make London the headquarters of the global Moravian network. But soon Zinzendorf was embroiled in controversy stemming from the Sifting Time and a financial scandal. In this lecture we will look at some of the sermons that Zinzendorf preached in English in the 1750s as he tried to address the controversy. We will focus on a long sermon preached to the Single Brothers’ Choir just a few months after the death of his son and heir Christian Renatus.

The stanzas are selected to develop a specific devotional theme. He was a gifted artist who   carefully documented his surroundings in numerous watercolors. In 1883 he suddenly moved to Canajoharie\, New York. Until his retirement in 1898 he taught art at the Canajoharie Academy. During these years he continued his artistic work until his death in 1900. SUMMARY:Lecture: Uncommon Bonds and the Digital Return of Labrador Inuit Documentary Heritage
DESCRIPTION:Online lecture via Zoom (please register by filling out the form below)\nby Dr. Mark David Turner\, Memorial University \nIn 1959\, the community of Hebron in Labrador was forcibly resettled by the Moravian Church\, Newfoundland Government and International Grenfell Association. The fifty-eight families that lived there were dispersed across the remaining communities of northern and central Labrador. The legacy of Hebron’s closure looms large in the recent history of the region. Less well known\, however\, is the story of the removal of tens of thousands of pages of church records from Labrador communities that same year. After the decision to close Hebron was announced\, Moravian missionaries invited William Whiteley\, an archivist-historian at Memorial University of Newfoundland\, to assess records in Happy Valley-Goose Bay\, North West River\, Makkovik\, Hopedale\, Nain\, and Hebron and remove them for processing\, microfilming and\, ultimately\, storage at the Moravian Archives in Bethlehem\, PA. Dating as far back as 1770\, these records are a vital chronicle of community life\, capturing subjects as diverse as language\, genealogy\, governance\, education and weather\, among many other things. With the support of a Council on Library and Information Resources Digitizing Hidden Collection Grant\, the Uncommon Bonds project is facilitating the digital return of these records to northern Labrador. In this presentation\, we will explore the history of this collection\, our approach to digital curation and how our work is shaped by new Inuit-directed approaches in documentary heritage. \nMark David Turner is a cultural historian and facilitator working at the intersection of media\, performing arts\, and archival practice in the Northwest Atlantic and Circumpolar North.
