Leading citizens of Bethlehem were divided over the bridge project undertaken in 1792, with some seeing it as a harbinger of further decline for the trouble town and others seeing it as an opportunity to increase connections and commerce.  Their struggles provide a window into this unique moment in Bethlehem’s history, poised between Moravian enclave and economic engine.

Dr. Kate Carté is Professor of History at Southern Methodist University
