Lectures: Moravians and Place–Three Explorations of Moravians and their Relationships to Place

April 28 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Panel presentation by Dr. Katherine Faull, Dr. Paul Peucker, and Joshua Follweiler
In person at the Moravian Archives or online by Zoom (please register by filling out the form below)

Moravians had a strong sense of place. Many of the localities where 18th-century Moravians settled continue to be important Moravian centers: Herrnhut, Nazareth, Winston-Salem, Bethlehem, to name a few. Moravian settlements and missions were more than mere geographic locations—they were spiritual landscapes. This panel will focus on three aspects of the Moravian creation of sacred places in the 18th century. Through these presentations, we gain a deeper appreciation of how Moravian religion was shaped by and, in turn, shaped the places they lived.

  • Katherine Faull, Moravian University: “Sacred Confluence: Place, Religion, and Cultural Exchange at the Moravian Mission of Shamokin, 1742–1755”
  • Paul Peucker, Moravian Archives: “The Mythical Attraction of the Moravian Town of Herrnhaag”
  • Josh Follweiler, Princeton Theological Seminary: “Moravian Urban Planning as Spiritual Practice”

This program is offered by the Moravian Archives in collaboration with the Institute for Moravian History and World Heritage.
